If you ask any child right now who their favorite singer is, you will probably hear the name Hannah Montana.
Hannah who? What happened to Britney and Christina?
Those with kids or access to the Disney Channel are probably all too familiar with this newest teen music phenomenon. Hannah Montana, a show that airs on Disney Channel, features the newest Disney “it” girl Miley Cyrus as Miley Stewart, a teenage girl who wishes to live a normal life but has a secret – a secret that only she, her family, and her two best friends know about.
She’s Hannah Montana, that famous blonde pop star who everybody at school wishes they could meet and hang out with. Too bad they don’t know she attends class with them!
The show Hannah Montana features Miley, her two best friends Lily and Oliver (Spy Kids’ Emily Osment and Mitchel Musso), brother Jackson (Jason Earles), and country singer Billy Ray Cyrus as they struggle to keep Miley’s double life a secret and help her continue to experience the “best of both worlds.”
In fact, leading actress Miley Cyrus has grown up living the “best of both worlds” herself. Born in Franklin, Tennessee, Miley lived a very normal life and grew up on a farm with father Billy Ray, mother Leticia, and her five siblings. At the same time, she could boast country singers Billy Ray Cyrus as her father and Dolly Parton as her godmother!
Billy Ray Cyrus, known best for his hit “Achy Breaky Heart,” traveled frequently to LA and Toronto to pursue his singing and acting careers while Miley was growing up in Tennessee. It was not until 2003, at the age of ten, did Miley herself begin to become involved in Hollywood, guest-starring on her father’s sitcom “Doc” and soon afterwards, appearing in “Big Fish.”
Born “Destiny Hope Cyrus,” Miley’s parents knew from the get-go that Miley was going to be a star and accomplish great things in her life. Her nickname of “Smiley,” which later became shortened to “Miley,” also displayed her happiness and love for life. It’s no surprise here that Miley became a great fit for tween Hollywood and landed the role of Hannah Montana at the young age of twelve, for what Disney Channel Executive VP Gary Marsh described as a unique mixture of Shania Twain and Hilary Duff.
It’s all history from there. The show Hannah Montana became an instant sensation, and Miley Cyrus not only acted and sang on the show but also toured with the Cheetah Girls in 2006, signed with Hollywood Records for a four-record album deal under her own name, appeared in the Disney Channel animated shows The Replacements and The Emperor’s New School, made a cameo on High School Musical 2, and is set to star in the 2008 film Further Adventures in Babysitting alongside Raven-Symone. There is even a rumor that a Hannah Montana movie is in the works for the big screen!
On top of all that, Miley Cyrus will soon be performing in the Best of Both Worlds Tour, which has already set immense ticket records just minutes after going on sale all across the country. Miley will star as herself and as the blonde wig-donning Hannah, performing songs from the two Hannah Montana soundtracks and her debut album, Meet Miley Cyrus.
The Best of Both Worlds Tour will also feature an opening act from the Jonas Brothers, another up-and-coming Disney musical group who will soon have a new television show, JONAS, and a movie, Camp Rock, airing on the Disney Channel in the near future.
With Miley’s fresh, friendly face and affable demeanor, it is all too plain to see that the days of Britney Spears teen idol worship are officially long over. No longer will kids be singing “I’m not that innocent” or “hit me baby one more time” – rather, they are now singing inspirational yet fun tunes such as “Nobody’s Perfect” and “Life’s What You Make It.”
Indeed, parents everywhere can sigh with relief over the breath of fresh air that is Hannah Montana.
