Spice Girls

Details

The Spice Girls began as strangers in the early 1990s. After responding to an ad, Victoria Beckham (then Victoria Adams), Geri Halliwell, Melanie Brown, Lianne Morgan and Michelle Stephenson were picked from hundreds of girls and chosen to form the girl group Touch. Lianne Morgan was replaced by Melanie Chisholm due to Lianne Morgan’s age. Michelle Stephenson was cut from the group due to an inability to gel with the other members. Emma Bunton was added and the group the world knows as the Spice Girls was formed.

After leaving their original management, the Spice Girls signed with Virgin Records. During a tour of the American west coast, the Spice Girls wrote and recorded tracks for their debut record. By July 1996, the Spice Girls’ single “Wannabe” was dominating British airwaves. The single debuted at No. 3 in the UK before claiming the No. 1 spot in 31 countries including the United States. “Wannabe” became the best-selling single by an all-female group of all time.

On the success of “Wannabe” the Spice Girls catapulted to international superstardom. With only three albums, the Spice Girls sold over 55 million records worldwide and Baby, Scary, Ginger, Sporty and Posh became the “most widely recognized group of individuals since John, Paul, George and Ringo of the Beatles. After unofficially disbanding in 2001, the original five Spice Girls reunited in time for the release of their Greatest Hits album and a world tour in late 2007.
