Since 1980 Big East Conference basketball teams have met in an intense postseason showdown in the Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament. Every March the eyes of basketball fans nationwide turn to Madison Square Garden to see which team will take the Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament title and receive an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament.
Basketball fans know the Big East Conference as one of the most successful basketball conferences in the nation. All except one of the 16 Big East Conference member schools have been to the NCAA Final Four. Three teams have dominated throughout the history of the Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Georgetown Hoyas won the Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament seven times, Connecticut Huskies and the Syracuse Orange follow with six and five titles respectively.
Playing the Cinderella role, the Pittsburgh Panthers breezed through the tournament to the Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament Championship Game where they met the top-seeded Georgetown Hoyas. It was Pittsburgh’s third trip to the final game of the Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament in three years, and their chance at revenge after losing to the Hoyas in 2007. The 2008 Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament ended in upset when the Panthers bested the Hoyas.
In 2009, the Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament will include 16 teams, providing more room for surprising upsets and dominating wins.
