Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on August 20, 1952, singer-songwriter John Hiatt picked up music at an early age. By age 11, John Hiatt was learning to play guitar and seeking solace in blues music as well as Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan, who would later record one of John Hiatt’s songs.
After moving to Nashville in 1970 and working as a songwriter, John Hiatt’s song “Sure As I’m Sitting Here” was recorded by the rock band Three Dog Night, becoming a Top 20 hit.
On the heels of his success as a songwriter, John Hiatt released his first album in 1974 Hangin’ Around the Observatory. Four years later, John Hiatt switched from country to new wave with his 1979 album Slug Line. During the 1980s John Hiatt released three stylistically different albums on Geffen Records including the 1983 bluesy, roots-rock record Riding with the King. B.B. King and Eric Clapton would later record the title track for their joint album.
John Hiatt would finally receive critical and commercial success with the 1987 folk-rock album Bring the Family, which featured Nick Lowe and Ry Cooder. Bring the Family featured the songs “Have A Little Faith in Me” and “Thing Called Love.” The following year, John Hiatt’s ninth album Slow Turning produced a Top 10 rock hit with the self-titled track.
In 2005, John Hiatt released his 18th album Master of Disaster, which included members of the North Mississippi All-Stars. The album peaked at No. 10 on Billboard’s Top Independent Albums chart. John Hiatt released an album of love songs called Same Old Man in 2008, which peaked at No. 5 on Billboard’s Top Independent Album chart.
