Along with rival Nirvana, Pearl Jam helped unleash the Grunge movement in the ‘90s which would forever change the face of modern rock. Pearl Jam’s legendary frontman, Eddie Vedder, boasts one of the best-known voices in modern music and – along with bandmates Jeff Ament (bass), Mike McCready (lead guitar), Stone Gossard (rhythm guitar), and Matt Cameron (drummer since 1998) – has influenced a generation of singers and bands.
After the members of Pearl Jam came together from various bands, Pearl Jam signed with Epic and recorded the album Ten, which was released in 1991 – a key time when Alterative Rock was bursting from the underground scene and into the mainstream. A trio of singles “Alive,” “Even Flow,” and “Jeremy” along with a flurry of tours and videos turned Pearl Jam into not only music superstars but cultural icons. Ten would eventually go on to become a 12-time platinum seller.
Pearl Jam’s second record was Vs. In response to the unwanted fame that came with Ten, Pearl Jam brought a harder sound and refused to make music videos. In spite of these actions Vs. set sales records and occupied the No. 1 spot on the Billboard chart for five weeks. “Daughter” and “Go” were hits even without video support, and Vs. went platinum seven times. Follow up Vitalogy broke more records and sold 5 million albums and won Pearl Jam a Grammy to boot.
Since Vitalogy, Pearl Jam released five more albums with each going platinum worldwide. “Last Kiss” and “Given to Fly” were also big hit singles.
