Between Jimmi Hendrix and Randy Rhoads on the wall of guitar gods is Carlos Santana. Since to the end of the 1960s Carlos Santana has been innovating and setting the standard for guitar artistry. Despite not always being in the mainstream or playing what trend was popular at the time, Santana has sold millions of albums, has done much to expand the genre of Latin Rock around the world, and has brought Latin music to the mainstream of America.
Santana broke out from their San Francisco fan base with a performance on the second day of Woodstock. Single “Evil Ways” ran with the fame from Woodstock and Santana was established. Follow up albums would go platinum through the early 1970s and more albums would go gold. The single “Black Magic Woman” was a hit and would remain a Santana staple for decades. Santana found critical gold with the instrumental heavy Caravanserai album.
Santana would constantly shift musical styles but the guitar of Carlos Santana was always a constant. Santana has also brought in outside artists on a regular basis for both the stage and the recording studio to very popular results. The peak of this was 2000’s Supernatural which went diamond in sales thanks to hits “Put Your Lights On,” “Maria Maria,” and “Smooth” featuring Rob Thomas.
