Founded in 1968 by Jon Anderson and Chris Squire, Yes became one of the most inimitable British bands of all time despite first gaining their fame by covering the songs of other bands such as the Byrds. Keyboards were the strength of Yes’ style with booming synthetic symphonies, improvised guitar, high register vocals, and vocal harmonies making up the core of Yes’ music. While Yes’ music varies greatly throughout the band’s 40-year history, much of it stays true to its roots.
Entering their golden age in the 1970s, Yes released The Yes Album, which had the first refined sound that Yes would be known for. After upgrading their keyboards, Yes would skyrocket to fame with albums Fragile and Close to the Edge. Yes became a can’t-miss live music act thanks to capitalizing on the most up-to-date music technology available. A triple live collection Yessongs was released to take advantage of Yes’ live popularity.
After many internal struggles and creative differences, Yes vanished from the music scene until the album 90125 was released in 1983, eventually going triple platinum. The album was a shift in the progressive rock of early Yes to more of a synth heavy pop feel. After years of turmoil, Yes released Big Generator, which featured hits “Love Will Find a Way” and “Rhythm of Love.”
To celebrate their 40th anniversary, Yes announced the “Close to the Edge and Back” tour for 2008. The classic Yes lineup returns with Oliver Wakeman replacing his father Rick on keyboards. Close to the Edge and Back will the biggest American Yes tour in years.
