After a rocky 2007-08 sports season, the University of Houston Cougars are poised for a comeback in 2008. Over UH’s long athletics history, the Cougars have won 55 NCAA individual championships and the Cougar men’s basketball team has reached the NCAA Final Four five times. Cougars’ athletics boasts golf, baseball, cross country, track and field teams in addition to hometown favorites like football and basketball.
Cougars football welcomes new head coach Kevin Sumlin and new offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen, formerly of Texas Tech University to shake up Cougar football after an 8-5 season last year. In the program’s long history, UH has participated in many bowl games such as the Cotton and Liberty bowls. The most recent was the 2007 Texas Bowl, where the Houston Cougars battled the TCU Horned Frogs. UH Coog fans can cheer on the hometown team during the 2008-09 season at John O’Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
Houston Cougars basketball enters into a rebuilding year for the 2008-09 season after seniors Rob McKiver and Dion Dowell – two of the Cougars’ leading scorers – exit the team. University of Houston coach Tom Penders and his Cougar team finished the 2007-08 season with a 24-10 record. The UH basketball program boasts NBA legends such as Hakeem Olajuwon, Clyde Drexler, and Moses Malone. The Coogs basketball team calls Hofheinz Pavilion home.
