In Fall 2008, the Royal Shakespeare Company begins its latest production of William Shakespeare’s tragic play, Hamlet. Putting a modern twist on the 500-year-old play, theater goers will notice changes in wardrobe and verbiage. British TV actor David Tennant will star as Prince Hamlet. Certainly no stranger to the works of Shakespeare, David Tennant has performed in several RSC productions such as Romeo and Juliet, King Lear and As You Like It.
The celebrated Shakespearean tragedy Hamlet, centers on Prince Hamlet who is distraught after the death of his father King Hamlet of Denmark. When Prince Hamlet’s mother Gertrude quickly marries King Hamlet’s brother, Claudius, Hamlet’s grief turns to anger. After he is visited by the ghost of his father, Hamlet devises a plot to seek revenge on Claudius for murdering his father.
For his revenge plot to go unnoticed, Hamlet must appear as though he is insane. Because of his erratic behavior, Hamlet’s love interest Ophelia is told to stay away him by her father Polonius and brother Laertes. Hamlet’s lust for revenge sinks him deeper into madness as he accidentally kills Polonius, causing Laertes and Claudius to devise a plot to murder Prince Hamlet. Shakespeare’s Hamlet has dire consequences for its unending cycle of murder and revenge.
